Neil Poulton

From Wires to Wallpaper Scottish product designer, Neil Poulton gained a BSc degree in Industrial Design and studied for his Masters degree in Design at the Domus Academy in Milan, Italy. He is best known for his work in the genres of technology and lighting design, has won numerous international awards and has produced designs for such diverse elements as lighting, servers, speakers and hard drives. Having moved to Paris in 1991, Neil Poulton has since collaborated with brands such as Atelie Sedap, LaCie, Megalit and Artemide. In fact, Neil’s current wallpaper design features hand-drawn sketches that were originally produced by the artist for Italian lighting manufacturer, Artemide and French computer hardware company, LaCie. Top Draw Design SKETCHES is a monochrome wallpaper with a white background, covered in hundreds of individual sketches which the designer has produced whilst designing various technological elements. Consequently, this wallpaper would work well in a modern minimalist setting or paired with simple Scandi style. The monochrome aspect gives the design simplicity, but look closer and you see the level of detail that adds a certain complexity to this wallpaper. There is something raw about this design as it literally shows rough sketches, drawn by hand by the designer, and therefore gives a nice representation of the process of designing. As such, this wallpaper might work well in a home office or in the workspace of a graphic designer or business concerned with design, lighting or technology. The theme of technology, in which Poulton specialises, is very current bearing in mind our continued developments in this area in order to improve everyday living. While the doodles in this design are simplistic, they are also a serious nod to the processes whereby modern technology grows ever sleeker and more functional, becoming an increasingly important aspect of our everyday lives. The sketches on this wallpaper display a number of references to lights and lamps so would be a quirky addition to a space in which interesting lighting or lamps feature as part of the overall room design. This is also a great wallpaper for gadget lovers and would work well in the study or bedroom of a gadget-loving individual. Likewise, it would be an appropriate design for an illustrator or anyone who loves a bit of doodling! Poulton himself, it seems, is no stranger to the humble pen having designed ‘Ageing Pens’ (also known as Mutant Pens) which were made from a type of ‘living’ plastic that aged with use, their layers of colour wearing away over time. If any of these themes inspire you, why not illustrate your love, be it for doodles, technology or elegant design, with this unique wallpaper. As with all NLXL designer wallpaper, this design has no repeat so it features hundreds of individual images.
