For the Foil Wallpaper Collection, our design studio created countless proof prints in search of something that felt truly organic. The challenge was immense: foil is a solid surface, impossible to print in shades. What followed were numerous failed attempts in gold, each one teaching us something new.

Eventually, we brought the prints to Piet Hein Eek for his perspective. In his unmistakable way, he immediately recognized the beauty hidden within the imperfections.

“Rick, I made a quick sketch,” he wrote in an email. “See if you can make it beautiful based on those tests. I’d start by keeping everything uniform, but in the end, it should still feel like a material with texture — so it varies a little.”

That’s exactly why we love working with him — he challenges us to see things differently. Looking at his sketch, it becomes clear why Piet Hein Eek and NLXL have collaborated for so many years: we simply understand each other.

The result is a celebration of imperfection — Diamonds- and Scraped Gold Wallpaper — two designs that capture the warmth, depth, and character of hand-crafted foil.
