The market public includes Japanese, Indonesians, ‘mardijkers’ (freed slaves recognizable by their striped clothes) and a Dutch–Indonesian couple with their slave carrying a pajoeng (parasol). The painting hung in the assembly room of the Oost-Indisch Huis in Amsterdam.
